Product Story
The LMS Jubilee Class 4-6-0 locomotives were some of the most distinguishable express passenger engines of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway.

Introduced in 1934, the class was designed under the direction of Sir William Stanier and named in honour of King George V’s Silver Jubilee, therefore becoming known as the “Jubilees.”
Built for express passenger work, these locomotives were powerful, handsome machines that hauled trains across the LMS network. Many of the locomotives carried names connected with British Empire territories and naval themes, including No. 5573 Newfoundland.
Bassett-Lowke worked with several highly-regarded European manufacturers during the early twentieth century, including Märklin of Germany, to produce premium model locomotives for the British market. Märklin’s engineering expertise, combined with Bassett-Lowke’s understanding of British railway prototypes, resulted in several exceptional models.
This O Gauge electric model of the LMS Jubilee Class, produced by Märklin for Bassett-Lowke, reflects the quality and precision for which both companies were known. Designed for 3-rail electric operation, the locomotive allowed enthusiasts to run a detailed representation of a famous British express engine on their home layouts.
Today, these collaborative models are highly sought after by collectors for their role in representing an important chapter in the history of international toy train manufacturing.

Mike’s Personal Note
I’ve always found the Jubilee Class locomotives to be particularly attractive engines. They have a very well-proportioned look, powerful enough for express work yet refined.
The Newfoundland No. 5573 is especially interesting because it was produced by Märklin for Bassett-Lowke. The collaboration between these two companies resulted in some wonderfully engineered models, and you can really see the quality in these locomotives.
The 4-6-0 wheel arrangement and tender give the locomotive the appearance of a proper mainline express engine, and when running on a layout, it looks exactly as you would expect an LMS locomotive to look: purposeful and impressive.
What I particularly enjoy about these 3-rail electric models is how smoothly they run when properly serviced. It’s always a pleasure to see one gliding around a layout, bringing a little piece of railway history back to life.
Whenever I come across a good Märklin-built Bassett-Lowke locomotive, I always take a moment to admire the engineering. They are wonderful examples of the craftsmanship that made early model railways so special.
